Secret Walker

Tallis has a secret. She can walk. But she isn’t letting anyone know. She only does it when no one is looking, or rather, when she thinks no one is looking.

The other day Matt caught her in the hallway, bowl of Cheerios clutched in her little hands, taking 8 whole steps before realizing she was caught and dropping to the floor in a hurry. I caught her in the living room, trying over and over to stand up on her own in the middle of the rug and take steps, determined to get this walking thing down. She stopped and came crawling over to me with a goofy, guilty grin on her face when she spied me peeking around the corner from the kitchen. Then she thrust her arms upward, “mup” pick me up mom, this is hard work.

Sure. Why let on that you can walk when you can guilt adults into providing a free ride? We have been prodding, encouraging, asking. She knows exactly what we are talking about. Walk, Tallis. More goofy grinning, with a narrow little twinkle in her eye as she buckles down and crawls towards us, arriving in our laps and plopping down with a definitive huff. See? I won’t do it and you can’t make me. In spite. Maybe it is because crawling is still so much fun. Maybe because she is reveling in the attention and aid she has been receiving as we have encouraged these tentative steps. Maybe it is the constant game she and her sister have been playing of holding hands and walking around in circles. Maybe we don’t know what we are talking about and four really is better than two.
