For Jill (part 1)

Jill has been my friend since Kindergarten. Actually, pre-kindergarten. We have often been mistaken as sisters, or at least related, as we share some resemblance to one another. Jill is an only child. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying she was spoiled or anything (she may differ on this opinion), but Jill had more barbies than anyone you have ever met. Jill had every Barbie ever made between 1985 and 1992. And Jill had every accessory to accompany Barbie as well. Jill had an entire walk in closet full of Barbie paraphernalia. Jill had a Barbie Corvette and a Barbie Jeep. Jill’s Barbie’s practiced polyandry, as Mattel was as off in the ratio of Kens to Barbies as they were with her head to body ratio. Jill rarely wanted to play anything besides Barbie. Jill recently claimed the honor of buying Araiya her first (and only) Barbie. Until Jill and I broke into the age of double-digits and she got a Nintendo (when we started playing nothing but the original Super Mario Brother’s and Duck Hunt) deciding what to do with a typical afternoon at her house went something like this:

Me: So, what do you want to do?
Jill: I don’t know, what do you want to do?
Me: Let’s go play in the woods and make bows and arrows.
Jill: Um, how ’bout we play Barbie Fashion Show?
Me: … How ’bout we make a fort?
Jill: No, we should play Barbie Fashion Show. We can dress them up Casual.
Me: What does cash-u-awl mean? Can’t we just go play in the mud?
Jill: NO, WE ARE PLAYING BARBIE FASHION SHOW.

Years later, as our time in a small mountain town’s microcosm of altered reality we called High School was winding down, our decision making process while driving around the one main street on a Friday night reduced to this:

Me: So what do you want to do?
Jill: I don’t know, what do you want to do?
Me: I don’t know, what is there to do?
Jill: Um, nothing.

20 minutes later…

Jill, So, what do you want to do?
Me: I don’t know, what do you want to do?

So Jill, my dear friend, this is for you:

  1. Hey, I do read your blog.

  2. Are you sure it was always Barbie Fashion Show? I think Barbie may have gone a camping trip or two also…Pretty funny and so true. I am definitely laughing to myself right now. Has Araiya ripped Barbies head off yet or cut her hair? From the pictures it looks like she likes Barbie and may need a Ballerino Ken to go along with Ballerina Barbie 🙂
